Communities at Risk: The Proposed MSX Pipeline Route

A spatial analysis revealing the communities most vulnerable to the impacts of the proposed MSX pipeline.

Analysis Details

This interactive map shows how communities in Mississippi are experiencing disproportionate challenges related to energy infrastructure. Our analysis looked at data from the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) and other sources to understand how communities near existing and proposed pipeline infrastructure are faring compared to others in the region.

What We Found

Communities located near pipelines and compressor stations often face a combination of health, economic, and environmental challenges. These include higher rates of chronic diseases like asthma and diabetes, greater financial strain, and increased exposure to environmental risks.

Understanding the Map:

This interactive map visualizes the potential impacts of the proposed MSX pipeline. The black line represents the planned pipeline route, and red dots indicate the locations of compressor stations.

Navigating the Map:

  • Find Your Location: Use the magnifying glass icon to search for your address or a specific location within the map.
  • Explore Different Factors: Click on the stacked layers icon in the top left corner to view different health, economic, and environmental factors impacting communities along the pipeline route.
  • Understanding the Shades: When you select a layer, areas will be shaded to represent the level of challenge. Lighter shades indicate communities facing a higher-than-average burden, while darker shades represent areas experiencing significantly elevated challenges.

Key to the Shades:

  • Lighter Shade (75th - 90th percentile): Indicates a higher-than-average burden in that category.
  • Darker Shade (90th - 100th percentile): Indicates a significantly elevated burden – among the highest in the region.

Generate a Community Impact Snapshot

To create a custom, printable report that includes a map and population characteristics for any location along the proposed pipeline:

  1. Choose Your Map Style: You can create a simple map showing only the basemap and pipeline, or you can highlight a specific factor by selecting it:
    • For a simple map: Turn off all features except Tracts, County, and Pipeline features using the layer controls.
    • For a shaded map: Select the specific factor you want to highlight (for example, Diagnosed Diabetes).

NOTE: The "Tracts" layer must remain checked in the layer menu to generate the data readout.

  2. Center the Location: Search for a specific location or zoom in until the Blue Crosshair is centered on your area of interest.
  3. Generate Report: Click the "Print Community Report" button. A new tab will open, displaying a map and a summary of key data for the Census Tract where you centered the crosshair.
  4. Print or Save as PDF: Use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P) to print or save the snapshot as a pdf.
